REX

REX: real-time detection of dissolved metals in flowing liquids.

REX (Real-time Elemental X-ray fluorescence) is our flagship product: a fully automated analyzer that detects and monitors dissolved metals in water and other low-viscosity liquids, in real time, down to one part per billion.

REX real-time dissolved metals analyzer

What REX does

REX detects dissolved metals in liquid flow systems in real time, down to one part per billion. It is the only product on the market that is fully automated and easy to use, from municipalities to businesses that need to ensure their liquids stay consistent.

Using our patented, highly accurate X-ray fluorescence process-control technology, REX detects and monitors dissolved metals in water and other low-viscosity liquids, such as light oils. It monitors elements from magnesium to uranium, and from high parts per thousand to low parts per billion, completely hands-free.

Built for continuous, hands-off monitoring.

Real-time detection, most elements measured to low parts per billion
No consumables
Fully automated and easy to use
ISO 17025 certified to an accuracy level of 99.65% (3 Sigma)
Up to 12 metals at once, where competing technology detects a single metal at a time
Substantial cost savings, conventional labs average about $150 per metal tested

REX vs. the competition

REX can detect up to 12 metals simultaneously, while any competing technology can only detect a single metal at a time. At an average of $150 per metal tested at conventional labs, the cost-savings potential is significant.

REX FAQs

Detection & performance

What dissolved metals can REX analyze?
From magnesium to uranium.
What liquids does REX work in?
Water and other low-viscosity liquids, such as light oils.
To what levels will REX detect?
From high parts per thousand to low parts per billion.
How many metals can REX detect at the same time?
Up to 12 metals at once, depending on the X-ray source and filter installed, specifically designed and tested for the elements chosen by the end user.
How accurate is REX?
REX is ISO 17025 certified to an accuracy level of 99.65% (3 Sigma).
What is the typical cycle time?
Parts-per-billion measurements require 1 hour; parts-per-thousand or parts-per-million require 15 minutes.
What is the spectral resolution of the X-ray detector?
Using the state-of-the-art detector, resolution is 120 eV FWHM for Fe-55.

Data & connectivity

How does the customer receive results?
Results are automatically emailed to a list of addresses specified by the customer.
How does REX send data?
Via Ethernet, WiFi, or satellite uplink (satellite is an extra charge).
Is REX capable of operating as a process-control instrument?
Yes. REX comes standard with 7 process-control ports set to the industry-standard 4 to 20 mA output.
How do I change the frequency of analysis?
The end user can change the frequency of analysis, report delivery to over 10,000 email addresses, process-control thresholds, and the metals analyzed, all via our proprietary, simple GUI.

Installation & operating requirements

Does REX require consumables or an operator?
No. REX operates under flow conditions with no consumables and no user interface required; it performs wellness checks and self-calibrates before each run.
Does REX operate in flow conditions or static grab-sample only?
REX is designed to operate in flow conditions at 40 ml/min.
Must the water flow be filtered?
REX normally does not require filtration, but particulate size cannot exceed 5 microns. We supply a dual 5-micron filter manifold for installations where particulates are an issue.
What pressure does REX operate at?
REX comes with an inlet pressure regulator factory-set to 1.5 PSIG at 40 ml/minute of flow.
What are the power requirements?
REX operates on standard line voltages of 110 to 220 Vdc at 20 A.
What is the operating temperature range?
35 °F to 120 °F.
Can REX be used in a wet environment?
In its standard enclosure, REX is water-resistant to minor spray; the NEMA G4 enclosure is water-resistant to direct spray.
Can REX be used in high-vibration environments?
REX is vibration-dampened to 100 Hz but should not be installed in high-vibration environments.
What is the weight of the REX unit?
48 pounds in the standard enclosure; 140 pounds in the NEMA G4 enclosure.
Is REX a laboratory-based instrument?
No. REX is designed for remote, in-situ placement at the site of concern.
Can REX be moved from site to site?
We don't recommend moving your instrument from its initial installation site. If you must move it, contact our trained personnel for assistance.

Safety & compliance

Is REX radiation-safe?
Yes. No radiation-source leakage has been found beyond the REX enclosure when operated at full power of 25 KV at 1 mA. All major components are safety-interlocked to prevent tampering.
Do I need special certification to operate REX?
Check with your local health and safety office. Typically REX must be registered with local authorities the same way a dentist's office registers its X-ray systems, usually a single-page form stating the location of use.

Reliability, warranty & support

What is the mean time between failure?
The MTBF is 14,000 hours.
What is the length of warranty?
AMDS warrants the REX instrument for 1 year against defects in materials and manufacturing. Extended warranties are available from your servicing dealer.
Is training available?
Yes. Contact the sales representative you purchased your system from for more information.
Are there trained service personnel for our application?
All products sold by us are serviced by our highly trained technicians.
If my instrument needs warranty service and must be shut down for an extended period, do you offer a hot-swap?
Yes. Contact your local sales representative.
